To keep your ears warm – or because it simply goes well with your outfit: when it gets cooler outside, hats and other headgear are particularly in demand.
The good news for anyone who is still hesitating: According to personal shopper Sonja Grau, everyone can “wear hats and the like very well”. After all, there is the right model for every head shape and every taste. Sometimes you just have to try a little.
Inspiration for new hat and cap trends is often provided by series, films – and their characters. Just think of style icon Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, from “Sex and the City” or, more recently, its sequel “And Just Like That”.
The hat trend for this: the fedora, a classic with a trick in the upper part and usually two dents in the front – an elegant alternative to the knitted hat. The staple can currently be a bit wider, the material made of leather.
With beret or umbrella
“Preppy dressing is also popular and what fits better than a beret?” says London-based stylist Lukas Blasberg. He refers to the “Emily in Paris” series, in which the flat woolen hat with a small point in the middle plays at least a supporting role.
Incidentally, it is also often referred to as a beret. According to Blasberg, you can wear them with a small veil. “But if you’re afraid of looking like a widow who just buried her fifth husband, stick to the classic shape,” says the stylist.
Speaking of preppy – the so-called newsboy hat with a peak, made of leather for example, is a popular companion this season. Since it will always be modern, it is also a “super investment piece”, says Blasberg.
On the other hand, if you want to be inspired by the film “Barbie” and the look of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, grab a cowboy hat – analogous to the western boot trend in shoe fashion. Incidentally, the models with wide brims can also be seen in autumn and winter made of very warm materials, such as tweed.
Crochet warmers
But there are even cozier alternatives. For example, a piece that should already be at home in many wardrobes and is similar to the bobble hat – only without the bobble: the beanie. A hat that, according to personal shopper Sonja Grau, you really can’t go wrong with: “The classic beanie generally goes with every hairstyle and head shape,” she says. “Knitted hats tend to be flattering both when you see a lot of hair and when there’s just a flash of bangs, for example.”
A trendy alternative to the classic beanie: the crocheted variant, which stylist Blasberg calls “crochet”. Because while dresses, tops and two-piece suits in a partly transparent crochet look were an integral part of the 2023 spring and summer collections – Vogue even called “crochet” the “trend of the hour” – the crochet look is now concentrating on headgear: from subtle designs to to variants with embroidery or beads.
The bucket hat for the winter
A little more unusual and above all something for the fashion-conscious: cuddly, voluminous fuzzy hats. Source of inspiration here: the 90s. Just think of the fluffy pink hat Pamela Anderson wore to the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. A fashion statement with a pinch of humor.
“This season headgear in a bright or contrasting color is just the thing,” summarizes Lukas Blasberg. “A fuzzy hat or crochet are eye-catchers. On the other hand, if you prefer things to be more relaxed, you can combine the fedora with a tonal boho dress.”
But what about a ubiquitous trend from recent years, the bucket hat with a foldable brim? The pieces, also known as fisherman’s hats, “are definitely still up there,” says Sonja Grau. “This season they will be lined, quilted, patterned, in corduroy or leather.” According to the fashion expert, you can also wear them in bright colors.
