What the Alonso change means for Mick Schumacher

Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin is not good news for Michael Schumacher. The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher now only has one option in Formula 1.

It was not good news for Mick Schumacher’s future in Formula 1: Aston Martin signed Fernando Alonso – and not Schumi junior.

The Haas driver had also been traded as a candidate to succeed Sebastian Vettel.

The four-time champion is said to have advertised to team owner Lawrence Stroll for a commitment from Schumacher.

“Sebastian Vettel’s good words didn’t help”

“Sebastian Vettel’s good words with Lawrence Stroll didn’t help,” said RTL expert Felix Görner. “That means there is only the Haas alternative for Mick Schumacher next season.”

Because the cockpit that Alonso is vacating at Alpine has already been taken – to the current reserve driver for the French, 21-year-old Australian Oscar Piastri.

No surprise for RTL expert Görner: “He is considered the mega talent.” Piastri came to Europe at the age of 16 and “then really won everything there was to win”: European Cup, Formula 3, Formula 2 – everything with Renault.

Future in Formula 1? Mick Schumacher must “negotiate well”

“Alpine had to take it now, otherwise it would have been gone,” said Görner. “He had offers from Williams and also from Alfa Romeo – and who knows who else would have come up with the idea.”

Together with Esteban Ocon, Piastri now forms a very young driver duo at Alpine.

For Mick Schumacher, without the possible options Aston Martin and Alpine, the negotiating position against Haas team boss Günther Steiner deteriorates. The 22-year-old now has to “negotiate well” in order to continue to secure his place in the Haas, according to Görner.
