What is work? | News

When we leave work we usually say: I didn’t stop for a minute! What day is today! We are used to associating working with putting the body or doing. However, have you ever wondered what it is to work for you?

In general, people tend to associate work with solving, analyzing or managing. It also often happens that as we grow professionally, work takes different forms and meanings, but inertia means that our way of thinking and organizing work remains the same. For example, a practice leader, new to the role, in a technology development company easily thinks that her job is to solve or accompany. However, his main task now lies in explaining, communicating, making the implicit explicit, assigning tasks to people, among others. In order to update the new meaning that the same verb has now taken on in the new role, it is necessary to ask ourselves “What is work for me?”. In this sense, it is valid to observe that the verb to work is a living concept that changes according to the position and organizational stratum.

From the analysis perspective of the Required Organization Theory, the work requires two components: goals or objectives and the use of discernment. More precisely, Elliot Jacques defines work as “the exercise of discretion, discernment and decision-making, within certain limits, when performing a task. It is driven by values and brings into play the cognitive abilities of the individual.” ((Elliot Jacques, 2004). Put this way, it no longer seems so simple. For this reason, most of us who work need a space to accompany us that gives us the opportunity and the possibility of thinking about our work, what we do several hours a day , more associated with the obligation than with satisfaction or learning, in some cases.

At VG & Asociados we start from the assumption that all people want to have the opportunity to work at a level that allows them to use their abilities to the fullest and that is why we enjoy accompanying people in changing roles and functions within the organization so that they can establish themselves in their position and get to apply the maximum of their capacity. That is the learning that we help to develop.
