What is Mastodon?

Twitter’s twists and turns have people looking for alternatives. Many have turned to the Mastodon service, whose number of users has increased by tens of thousands of users in a short time. According to Mastodon it has over 470,000 monthly active users. There are more than 3.5 million users in total.

At the end of October, Mastodon was one of the most talked about topics on Twitter.

Users can decide whether their accounts are public, as can the posts themselves. If you want to keep the publications private, they will only be visible to those users who are the person’s followers – in the same way as, for example, on Facebook, if the account is not public.

Although Mastodon resembles Twitter, it doesn’t work the same way as Twitter. Mastodon is not a single service, but consists of different servers, i.e. instances. Mastodon consists of several different sites, such as the Finnish mastodontti.fi.

The users manage the service themselves, that is, it is not in the hands of a giant company. Users may choose to install the Mastodon server themselves.

You can create a Mastodon token in any instance, after which you can also communicate in other instances. The instances have their own rules, which are explained when logging in.

Your own updates, i.e. tutits, only stay in one instance, so you should be careful which instance is associated with which. The largest are, for example, mastodon.social and mstdn.social. Mastodontti.fi works in Finnish.

In practice, however, using Mastodon with the application is easy, and following and following it is no more difficult than on Twitter.

Celebrities gone

Many Twitter users have complained about the service, including several public figures. The list of those who have left includes, for example, a TV face Shonda Rhimesartist Sara Bareilles and R&B legend Toni Braxton.

Reuters reported last week that Twitter has lost a significant number of its more active users. These active referrers are less than 10 percent of all monthly users, but they are responsible for 90 percent of tweets and bring half of the revenue to the service. Musk’s Twitter trades have certainly played a part in this.
