What is histaminosis, the new disease recognized by the Ministry of Health

The Minister of Health of the Nation, Carla Vizzottisigned the resolution to incorporate the histaminosis to the list of Rare Diseases (EPOF) achieving that Argentina be the first country in the world to recognize this disease. It is a disease caused by the excessive histamine buildupan immune system substance present in the brain, which influences multiple processes, such as regulating stomach functions, acting as a neurotransmitter in the nervous system, and influencing the immune system, producing reactions against allergens.

The symptoms of histamitosis can be headaches and migraines; digestive problems (diarrhea, gastritis, bloating, nausea, vomiting); bone and joint pain; sudden increase in body volume; skin dryness or hives; alteration of the heart rate and even problems infertilityIn addition to the possibility of suffering miscarriages.

The causes of histaminosis are attributed to DAO deficiency (alteration in the metabolism of histamine that occurs when the activity of the enzyme Diamine Oxidase is reduced), the intestinal dysbiosis (alteration in the composition and/or functions of the Microorganisms on the skin and inside the intestines and vagina) bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine; the Intestinal yeast infection (infection that affects the small intestine caused by various varieties of the candida fungus) or mastocytosis (MCAS) (a rare disorder that causes the buildup of excessive numbers of mast cells, a type of white blood cell, in the body).

The most important measure to treat this disease is Avoid foods high in histamine, such as red wine, tomatoes, cold cuts, and cheese. Symptoms can also be relieved by antihistamine medications.

The recognition of histaminosis as a rare disease was thanks to the work of the Association for Patients with Histaminosis in Argentina (AHA)a non-profit group founded in 2022 by a group of self-convened patients and family members, whose objective is to raise awareness and make visible about this condition, as well as about other little-known diseases such as mastocytosis.
