Here we tell you everything you need about the climatic phenomenon ‘El Niño’

This new phenomenon could mean a significant increase in temperatures and more extreme heat waves

Surely you have already heard some experts in climatology warning about the arrival of ‘El Niño’, a weather phenomenon that is expected to begin to gain strength in the second half of 2023 and, even more so, during 2024. If you are still a bit lost on this topic, do not worry because In this publication you will be able to read everything you need to know about what it is and how it will affect your arrival in Spain over the next few months.. We already anticipate that this could mean a significant rise in temperatures and even more extreme heat waves.

What is ‘El Niño’ and why does it have that name?

As indicated from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)is about a natural phenomenon that affects the temperature changes of the oceans of both the central and eastern equatorial Pacific and is closely related to swaps in the atmosphere. This is known as ‘El Niño’ or Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Therefore, its name is due to the time when some of its most important effects occur: Christmas. The South American fishermen named it ‘El Niño’ after baby Jesus.

To the above it must be added that from 2017 to 2022 it had not appeared and, although Spain has continued to register high temperatures, the arrival of ‘El Niño’ is a problem in the making. In 2016, the last time this happened, Córdoba reached 45ºC and in Kuwait no less than 54ºC was registered. That is why it is feared that in the following months and especially in 2024, the aforementioned numbers may be repeated and even exceeded.

When and how will it affect us in Spain?

‘The boy’ It is associated with a considerable increase in the planet’s temperature, longer and stronger heat waves, and more extreme droughts.. This is a situation that has nothing to do with sight in recent years, in which ‘La Niña’ has been the protagonist and that, logically, implies the opposite assumption, with lower values than should be.

It will be in the following weeks when, it seems, ‘La Niña’ will begin to lose strength and ‘El Niño’ will become increasingly important. A few days ago the expert Mario Picazo warned of this in a series of tweets, in which stated that Europe will feel the effects of this phenomenon in the summer months and 2024, when the arrival of this weather phenomenon is more evident. Finally, it should be mentioned that The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States (NOAA) already points to a 66% probabilitya percentage that will increase over the months.
