Minister and CDA leader Wopke Hoekstra caused quite a stir at the end of last week with his interview in Algemeen Dagblad. According to him, the government’s goal to reduce nitrogen emissions everywhere by 50 percent by 2030 is ‘not sacred’.
He thus sharpened the relations in the coalition, because Hoekstra’s statement goes against the agreements of the coalition agreement of VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie.
The House of Representatives thinks it is enough to come back from the recess and have a debate about the issue. This happens after a request from PVV leader Geert Wilders, who received support from the coalition parties, among other things.
How far does CDA dare to push this issue to a head, also in relation to D66, the party that does not want to change the nitrogen targets at all? For example, is breaking open the coalition agreement an option, or is this the beginning of the end of Rutte IV?
