What do the numbers say? Ajax wants to deal with May 8 trauma in NH derby

Based on the statistics, we look ahead to the 32nd round in the Eredivisie. On Mother’s Day, AZ and Ajax meet in Alkmaar. The team from Amsterdam can become champions tomorrow, but the date May 8 brings up unpleasant memories for Ajax players.

Date of death:
The last six matches on May 8 were not won by Ajax. At home against Tottenham Hotspur, reaching the Champions League final was lost in injury time three years ago. In 2016, things went wrong at De Graafschap (1-1) on the last match day, so that PSV suddenly took off with the national title. Eleven years ago it also went wrong on this date. In the cup final, FC Twente was too strong after extra time with 3-2.

AZ played eight times on May 8. The Alkmaarders won four times, but also lost four times.

Possible championship later in the day:
There is a chance that Ajax will be able to call itself national champion for the 36th time tomorrow. That requires a victory in Alkmaar and later in the day Feyenoord must beat PSV. The last time a team became champions without taking action was in 2009. AZ lost to Vitesse, but due to Ajax’s defeat at PSV a day later, the Kaaskoppen were partying. Ajax was last champion 24 years ago without playing itself.

Achievements this calendar year:
Despite the lesser field game, Ajax is performing very well in 2022. Twelve of the thirteen competition matches were won. This makes it the best performing team this year. AZ won eight games, drew three times and lost twice. With these performances, the Alkmaarders are fifth in the ranking over the last four months.

50/50 that AZ takes at least one point:
Based on the last ten competition matches in Alkmaar, Ajax is the favorite. Half of the times, the three points went to Amsterdam. AZ won three times and it was tied twice. Last season Erik ten Hag’s team won 3-0 through goals from Antony, Davy Klaassen and David Neres.

No draw in last ten matches:
Earlier this season, AZ won 2-1 in the Johan Cruijff Arena. Vangelis Pavlidis and Zakaria Aboukhlal scored for Pascal Jansen’s team. Sébastien Haller scored the Ajax goal in between. In the KNVB Cup, the team from Amsterdam drew the longest end: 0-2. AZ has won four of the last ten meetings in all competitions. Ajax won the other six matches.

AZ – Ajax can be followed live tomorrow afternoon in an extra radio broadcast by NH Sport. The kick-off in Alkmaar is at 2.30 pm. The broadcast on NH Radio starts half an hour earlier.
