Between 1977 and 2000, the Film Museum carried out three surveys on Argentine cinema: different critics, investigative journalists from the country risked what they considered to be the ten best films in the history of our cinema. More than twenty years after the last edition, film review magazines “Taipei”, “The useful life” and “The burning earth”come together to carry out a new survey, this time extended to filmmakers and personalities of Argentine culture in general.
Ivan Bustinduy, coordinator of Taipei, points out the reasons for the project: “The main objective was to know the perspective on Argentine cinema as we move away chronologically, decade by decade. The other objective has to do with the transformations of Argentine cinema, especially from 2000 to 2022, which previous surveys did not contemplate. the races of Lucrecia Martel, Mariano Llinasamong others, just started at the beginning of 2000. It is also recognizing that films from the last 22 years have remained in the retina”.
The survey will be presented in person on November 11 within the framework of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, that same day the results will be made public on the website. The site will allow interactive navigation among the top 100 most voted films, the profiles of each one and the lists of those surveyed. Those responsible for the development of the project were, exclusively, Argentine digital magazines. On the one hand, the magazine “Taipei” focused on research and film criticism, which proposes to disseminate texts of an essayistic nature, both online and on paper. On the other hand, the editorial collective project “The useful life”, born in 2017, which produces books and magazines. The third component is the website “The Earth Burns”directed by Mercedes of the Orderdedicated to cinematography.
Among the participants you can find personalities from very diverse backgrounds, such as Fernando Martín Peña, Fito Páez, Víctor Hugo Morales, Rafael Spregelburd, Mariana Enríquez, Miguel Rep, Elvio Gandolfo, Mariano Llinás, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Horacio Verbitsky, Ricardo Aronovich, Ana María Picchio, Alejandro Dolina, Santiago Mitre, Carlos Ulanovsky, Juan José Campanella, Axel Kuschevatsky, Ana Katz, Alan Pauls, Tute, Felipe Pigna, Julieta Zylberberg, Liniers and Mauricio Kartunamong others.
The survey carried out in digital, unlike the previous ones in paper format, also had its special characteristics in the choice of the respondents, Bustinduy details: “The digital format helps to access knowledge and the existence of the results. Beyond that, we make two decisions. In principle, open the survey to people from the cinema: directors, producers, screenwriters, actors, technicians, teachers, film club members and programmers. This establishes the results with a more plural look. On the other hand, we extended the survey to personalities from the general culture who had an interest in cinema”.
“What is striking between the results of the previous surveys and this one has to do with some factors. A greater presence of documentary cinema, more visualization of experimental cinema and the consolidation of cinema directed by women. This has several edges, on the one hand, from 2000 to today, it was the most fruitful period of cinema made by female directors. On the other, examine the validity of certain untouchable figures of Argentine cinema.
