Wet dog food in the test – inexpensive does not have to be bad

Many of the approximately 11 million dogs in Germany are given wet food by their owners. A daily ration for a medium-sized dog is already available for 83 cents. Is this one of the winners?

Does your dog love savory smelling wet food? Then he’s probably lucky. Because the Stiftung Warentest examined 22 products for adult animals and found almost half to be good and very good.

A top quartet leads the test (issue 5/2022): These are inexpensive private labels:

► Edeka Fine Meal (1.37 euros per daily ration for a 15-kilo, moderately active dog), Aldi Romeo Classic Feine Pate 1.45 euros), Lidl Orlando Brocken (0.83 euros) and Rewe Ja Juicy Pate (1, 40 euros).

Two organic products, on the other hand, are only sufficient for the testers, with five branded products bringing up the rear. Their points of criticism: deficiencies in the appropriate feeding recommendations and insufficient nutrients such as phosphorus (important for the skeleton), linoleic acid (good for the coat) and magnesium (regulates muscle function).

The recyclability of the packaging also counts

For the first time, the recyclability of the packaging was also evaluated in a feed test:

The tin can clearly won the race (90 percent recyclable), followed by the aluminum and plastic shells, which are 75 percent recyclable on average. Plastic bags, on the other hand, can only be recycled for less than 20 percent.

Puppy food often recommend inappropriate rations

In the separate test on the food for puppies, only two out of six did well:

► Pedigree Junior (EUR 1.77 per daily ration for a ten-week-old puppy with a final weight of 15 kilos) and Edeka Feine Mahl Junior (EUR 0.98).

However, the Edeka feed for giant breeds is not the best choice. Two products fail completely. Reason: You recommend inappropriate rations or there is a lack of nutrients.
