Westerveld gives holiday homes a residential destination in exchange for money

When you walk into his garden you have a beautiful view of the edge of the Drents Friese Wold. Henk Dingerdis has lived for 23 years in one of the 34 bungalows of holiday park Nieuwland in Wapse. “It is really my home and a wonderful place. I enjoy living there,” he says.

When you walk through the holiday park, you get the feeling that it is an ordinary residential area. After all, most of the residents have lived there permanently for years. However, that is legally illegal. Due to a lack of enforcement, the municipality turned a blind eye to this for years, but now action is being taken.

Because there are too many parks in Drenthe that are dilapidated or where people live permanently. Together with the province, the municipalities are mapping out these parks and parks that no longer meet the quality standards are brushed aside.

Westerveld has 64 holiday parks and people live permanently in a number of those parks. One of these is Nieuwland Park. It is by no means dilapidated, but the owners have been using their bungalow as a residence for decades. Together with the municipality, they drew up a plan to give their place a permanent residential destination.

This does mean that the value of the homes and the land will increase significantly. The municipality wants to collect part of that increase in value from the home owners. That can amount to more than ten thousand euros.
