West Ham have taken action against a group of their fans who appeared to have used drugs during a match at London’s Olympic Stadium. A video posted on social media shows a man placing a white powder on the bald head of a man in front of him, while another appears to be sniffing the white powder.
It’s unclear when the video was shot…
The club released a statement expressing its disgust at the contents of the video and confirmed it had acted swiftly to identify the culprits. In line with their zero tolerance approach, details of offenders were immediately passed on to the Police and all individuals had their subscriptions suspended. They can therefore no longer enter the West Ham stadium or follow their favorite team away. Pending the club’s investigation into them, this could lead to the offenders being banned indefinitely. The club has made it clear that there is no place for this type of behaviour.
West Ham were featured in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night, winning 2-0 in the first knockout round first leg against Cypriot side AEK Larnaca thanks to Michail Antonio’s brace. It has been a difficult season for David Moyes’ side, 16th in the Premier League table and just one point above the relegation zone.
The incident has raised concerns about drug use among football fans, particularly in light of recent cases also involving players. In January 2022, former Tottenham Hotspur player Jermaine Jenas spoke about his own experiences with drugs during his competitive career, revealing he had used cocaine and ecstasy. He called on football authorities to do more to tackle the problem and provide support to players who may be struggling with addiction.
Drug use among football fans is not a new phenomenon, but it is becoming increasingly visible thanks to social media and cell phone technology. In recent years, there have been several cases of fans caught using drugs during matches, including at Wembley Stadium during England’s Euro 2020 matches.
