West Flemish church factories largest guzzler of municipal money
In 2021, the Flemish church factories spent more than 53 million euros in tax money to maintain their buildings. In West Flanders alone, cities and municipalities paid a good 16 million euros to the church factories. The province is therefore by far the largest guzzler of those municipal funds, at least for 2021. This is evident from figures that Vooruit member of parliament Kurt De Loor requested from Bart Somers (Open VLD), Flemish minister of the Interior.
Vooruit now wants to get rid of that “knife to the throat” and has now submitted a proposal for a decree. De Loor wants to get rid of the obligation and wants to give municipalities the choice of whether or not they fit in. He is submitting a proposal for a decree for this purpose. Coalition partner CD&V absolutely does not want to participate in that story.
