West Flanders receives subsidies for art in public

Flemish Minister of Culture Jan Jambon spends 2.05 million euros on 21 art projects that should enrich the Flemish street scene.

Roundabout Zeebrugge

One of the West Flemish locations where new art will emerge is the roundabout on the Baron de Maerelaan in Zeebrugge. Visitors arrive there by car in the seaside resort. Flanders City of Bruges is awarding 60,000 euros for the work. The city council itself and Unizo are also investing in the artistic interpretation that will result from a design competition. One requirement is that the new symbol of the coastal municipality represents the three groups that exist in Zeebrugge: dock workers, residents and tourists.

In Ostend, the KAAP Arts Center will get to work with a subsidy of 30,000 euros. Their creation will be an asset to the Ostend district of Westerkwartier. For this they work together with the neighborhood festival Quartiers d’O, which next week will be devoted to the same neighbourhood. Afterwards, the festival evolves into an annual operation in which residents will have a say in a permanent work of art for their neighbourhood.
