The Wes Anderson style popular on social media isn’t quite as popular with the director himself.
Wes Anderson has revealed in a new interview that he doesn’t think much of the current social media trend, in which videos emulating his style are shared and thereby become hype. So the film producer, screenwriter, and director isn’t the biggest fan of people mimicking his aesthetic for likes.
He doesn’t look at the clips either. “I protect myself from it. I’d be scared to think, ‘Do people really see my films like that?’” he recently revealed in a conversation with the French publication Le Monde.
In early June, Anderson had already expressed contempt for the imitations in an interview with The Times. “If someone sends me something like this, I immediately delete it and say, ‘I’m sorry, but please don’t send me stuff from people who imitate me.'”
The 54-year-old is particularly interested in videos, photos and memes, which have been shared more and more since the release of his film “Asteroid City” (2023). In it, users try to imitate Anderson’s retro look by romanticizing everyday activities through blurry filters and special cuts, overlaying the films with a serif-heavy, playful font, and underlaying their clips with Alexandre Desplat’s song “Obituary”. This was written especially for Anderson’s 2021 film “The French Dispatch” and is freely available on platforms such as TikTok to accompany private videos.

In the interview, Anderson also talks about his next feature film, which will star Benicio Del Toro. According to indications, the work is about espionage and a father-daughter relationship. The title and release date have not yet been announced. “Asteroid City” is currently in cinemas and was released on June 15, 2023.
