Wervershoof will be the next location for crisis emergency shelter for asylum seekers

In Wervershoof, land is being cleared for the new location for the crisis emergency shelter. About two hundred asylum seekers will stay there between November this year and May 2024. “We also want to take our responsibility,” said acting mayor Dennis Straat van Medemblik.

The emergency shelter was opened for the first time last year in Heiloo. Intended to overload the overcrowded application center in Ter Apel. The shelter then moved to Alkmaar, Bergen, Enkhuizen and currently the pavilion is located on Julianastraat in Avenhorn (municipality of Koggenland).

It had been clear for some time that the reception center would move to the municipality of Medemblik. In recent months, several locations within the municipal boundaries have been investigated, and ultimately the meadow at Vok Koomensweg 3 in Wervershoof turned out to be the most suitable.

Mayor Street understands that there may be many questions and concerns about the crisis emergency shelter. “But at previous reception locations we also saw a lot of involvement among the residents. We do it together, with the municipalities, residents and the aid organizations involved. I am confident that the crisis emergency shelter in Medemblik is also going well.”

Walk-in meeting for Wervershovers

Local residents have received a letter and a walk-in meeting is being organized for the residents of Wervershoof. The North Holland North Security Region is responsible for organizing crisis emergency shelter.

“We have now gained extensive experience in arranging shelter for these people in need,” says director Krishna Taneja. “We are also committed to providing shelter in the most humane way possible in Medemblik.”

Work on the Vok Koomenweg site will start at the beginning of September.
