Werner Gegenbauer resigns as President of the Bundesliga soccer club Hertha BSC. On Tuesday evening, the club announced that Gegenbauer had resigned after 14 years in office. Several media had previously reported on his imminent resignation.
“There are moments for new beginnings, and I think and feel that such a moment has come today,” Gegenbauer is quoted as saying in a statement on the Hertha website. With his resignation, the much-criticized 71-year-old also forestalled a possible deselection at the Hertha general meeting next Sunday. Several motions to vote out of office had already been submitted for the general meeting, which concerned Gegenbauer’s person.
Gegenbauer’s power struggle with Windhorst
There has recently been repeated criticism of President Gegenbauer and his work. Above all by Hertha investor Lars Windhorst, who publicly instigated a power struggle with Gegenbauer, but also from the fan scene, in which the entrepreneur has been controversial for a long time. When he was last re-elected as President in October 2020, Gegenbauer, who ran unopposed at the time, only received 54 percent of the votes.
In his statement, Gegenbauer writes about the differences with Windhorst: “I would like to make it absolutely clear that the current disagreements with our investor played no role in my decision.” Instead of a personal dispute with Windhorst, it was “a controversy between Hertha BSC and Tennor Holding”.
CFO Schiller is also leaving
After the successful Bundesliga relegation in the Relegation against HSV leaves after caretaker manager Felix Magath, who, as expected, announced his departure shortly after the game, another important person for the club. And others will follow: As Hertha BSC announced on Tuesday morning, CFO Ingo Schiller will also stop with the Berliners.
The club announced on Twitter that they had agreed on an “early termination of the contract as Finance Director on October 31, 2022”. In 1998 Schiller moved to the Executive Committee of Hertha BSC and has been the Finance Director since July 2001. He should have his last big appearance on Sunday at the general meeting of the Berliners.
