Unlike city rivals Bremer SV, Bundesliga club Werder Bremen will not yet be affected by energy-saving measures in the DFB Cup.
“It’s not up to me to rate that, but the showers will stay warm with us,” said coach Ole Werner in a media round. And before the first round game at the regional league team Energie Cottbus (Monday, 6 p.m. / Sky) he added with a smile: “I hope at least that there will be no cold shower for us in Cottbus.”
The background to this is the decision by the city of Oldenburg that the showers during the cup match between Bremer SV and FC Schalke 04 on Sunday will remain cold to save energy. Because their own stadium at Panzenberg is too small, the regional league promoted BSV moves to Oldenburg for this game.
“It’s clear that football – when it comes to travel – is an energy-intensive job,” said Werner. But he prefers to leave that assessment to the experts. “Everyone should look privately in their area to see what they can do without.”
When it comes to energy, the Werder coach is currently more concerned with the outsider from Cottbus. “We know that a very ambitious regional league team is waiting for us,” said Werner, who himself had good experience in the DFB Cup. In 2021 he threw FC Bayern Munich out of the competition with Holstein Kiel in the second round. “It’s the first round of the DFB Cup and you know that every year higher-class teams have problems with lower-class opponents – and sometimes even fail. We’ve been warned about that,” he said.
