Werder Bremen’s filling jug about Keïta: “Good sign for further transfers”

Werder Bremen

Niclas Füllkrug (30) is happy about the transfer of Liverpool’s Naby Keïta (28) to Werder Bremen. On the Sunday before the DFB game (Monday, 6 p.m. / ZDF) against Ukraine, the center forward left open whether he will play alongside the most valuable new signing in the club’s history in the 2023/24 season. Keïta’s free transfer is “incredibly strong” and a “good sign for further transfers and the current situation at Werder Bremen”.

Füllkrug said in the “Sportschau” at the end of May that there was “already a need for action. It will be crucial that you make good decisions and make improvements so that you can attack another category in the table next season.” Werder have done so so far with the additions of striker Dawid Kownacki (26; Düsseldorf) and Keïta – both free transfers. Before his DFB home debut, Füllkrug said: “It was clear to everyone at the club that we were still improving in quality, that we also needed one or the other player to make a difference.”

The top scorer, whose contract runs until 2025, has been on the list of many clubs since the World Cup in Qatar at the latest, which can offer him more salary than the rumored 2 million euros he is supposed to earn in Bremen. “A few things” have already picked up speed, “but basically it’s still very calm,” said the striker, who will be in the starting XI against Ukraine. “I think that after this international phase we will talk a little more intensively with Werder.” Next year’s European Championships at home “play an important role for me”.
