Werder Bremen celebrated their first win after returning to the Bundesliga in a sensational way. Up to the 89th minute, Bremen were 2-0 down at Borussia Dortmund and finally won sensationally 3-2 (0-1).
Julian Brandt (45+2) and Raphael Guerreiro (77) put BVB on the road to victory. Lee Buchanan (89′), Niklas Schmidt (90’+3) and Oliver Burke (90’+4) shot Werder to victory. BVB conceded their first defeat after two wins at the start. Werder celebrated their first win after two draws.
Dortmund Central Station closed
It was initially unclear whether the game could kick off at 3:30 p.m. Due to a storm, Dortmund Central Station was closed on Saturday (08/20/2022), so the fans had massive problems getting there.
The spectators, who made it to the stadium on time, saw Dortmund’s first goal after less than two minutes. Mo Dahoud fired the ball just wide of the left post from 20 yards out.
A promising start that was not to be confirmed. Many fouls and technical errors did not allow the game to flow.
Kobel saves twice against Ducksch
After about 20 minutes, Werder came into play better and also had chances. Marvin Ducksch had the Bremen lead on his feet twice, but shot too centrally in the 34th minute and failed at BVB keeper Gregor Kobel. In the 44th minute, the Swiss goalkeeper parried a free kick from the Bremen striker.
There was little offensive from BVB, but then came Brandt. In injury time in the first half, the midfielder moved from the right into the middle and chased the ball powerfully from 18 meters with his left and bottom right corner (45+2) and provided Dortmund with a flattering lead at the break.
Bremen demands penalties
Werder bravely came out of the break and took control of the game from the 50th minute. In the 55th minute, Bremen called for a penalty after the ball caught Mats Hummels in the penalty area. Because Hummels had supported himself with his arm on the ground, referee Florian Badstübner’s whistle was silent.
But Bremen also had chances. Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck saved in dire need against Anthony Jung who was ready to score (59′), then Kobel saved again against a direct shot by Ducksch (60′).
As a result, Dortmund invested more forward again, but initially without coming to dangerous conclusions. It was almost logically a standard situation that made the decision. After a corner, the second ball landed in front of Guerreiro’s feet. The Portuguese took a powerful shot from 25 meters, Pavlenka saw the ball late and was powerless (77th). It was Dortmund’s second shot that went straight on goal – and the second goal.
Bremen turns the game
Werder looked defeated and regained hope in the 89th minute. Kobel fended off a ball forward, Buchanan switched the fastest and hit the top right corner to connect. And that’s not all. In the third minute of added time, Amos Pieper crossed into the penalty area, where Schmidt headed in to equalize.
But it got even crazier: Just a minute later, BVB lost the ball in midfield. Weiser quickly played to Burke, who actually shot Werder to victory (90+4).
BVB continues on the 4th matchday next Saturday (08/27/2022) with an away game at Hertha BSC. Werder Bremen welcomes Eintracht Frankfurt a day later.
