Werder Bremen sign ex-Leipziger Burke – free transfer from Sheffield United?

agreement in principle

SV Werder Bremen hit the transfer market once again this Wednesday. After the move from Jens Stage (25) from FC Copenhagen, Oliver Burke (25) from the English second division team Sheffield United is also coming to the Bundesliga promoted team. As Bremen reported, both clubs have basically agreed on a transfer. Only the last formalities are still to be clarified, it is said. But Burke is supposed to go to the training camp in Austria on Thursday.

Burke moved from West Brom to Sheffield in 2020 for a fee of 6.5 million euros, where he was unable to assert himself in the long term. The Scot made 36 appearances for the Blades, scoring two goals and providing one assist, before being loaned out to Millwall FC in the second half of last season. There he also collected two goals and one assist in 13 appearances. Although Burke is still under contract in Sheffield until 2023, a free transfer to Werder is apparently not unthinkable. As the “picturereported that the English were ready to let the attacker go free of charge.

Due to Stage’s expensive commitment, another multi-million dollar deal with Burke would not be possible for Bremen. In the course of the farewell, Sheffield only wrote of a “secret agreement” between the two clubs. For Burke, Werder is meanwhile the second station in Germany, where he was already active for RB Leipzig. The “Red Bulls” took the then 19-year-old Burke from Nottingham Forest for €15.2m in 2016, but ended the partnership after just one season and 26 games with three goals involved and sold the youngster for €15.2m West Brom.
