Werder Bremen and the quarter of an hour after half-time: “In everyone’s head”

Last 4 goals against in 4 games

With 31 points from 26 games, the first Bundesliga season after promotion was quite satisfactory for Werder Bremen. Recently, however, the sporting trend has been a little downhill, because there were only four points from the last seven games. In addition, a weakness immediately after the change of sides became more and more noticeable. An explanation of these problems, also using the TM Statistics “Table by Minutes” is clearly visible, captain Marco Friedl searches in vain.

“It’s extremely difficult not only for outsiders, but also for us,” said the 25-year-old (quoted via “foosball”) in a media round on Wednesday. Bremen conceded the 2-1 goal against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the 50th and 52nd minute, against Gladbach it was the 48th minute before the international break and two weeks earlier they came up against FC Augsburg in the 46th minute Residue.

“I think it’s in everyone’s head. And everyone knows that we lose the games in such phases,” says Friedl. “This has to get better. Because that’s how we leave far too many points behind.” In fact, Bremen are one of the worst teams in the league in the first 15 minutes of the second half over the whole season. Only Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart came out of the break even weaker than Werder, who scored three goals and conceded eleven in 26 games (to the statistics).

TM Stats: Sort Bundesliga table by minutes

On Saturday, Friedl and his team meet Mainz 05 – and throws out new approaches for the time after the tea break: “I don’t know if you might say that we’re going full throttle for the first five to ten minutes. Or we stand in the back, clear every ball so that you get security again.” Basically, however, he is primarily concerned with the “simplest things that are part of football: defending in the box, being on the man, preventing crosses”. . If Bremen take these tips to heart, “the point will come where we are so secure that we won’t concede any more goals after half-time.”
