It is common knowledge that Wendy van Dijk is a healthy lifestyle adheres to, but no one can withstand a horror mosquito. During her vacation in Thailand, one of those bitches got to her, and as a result, the star presenter of Talpa is extremely ill. She is currently in bed and is asking her followers for help.

Mosquito stings Wendy

Wendy posted a picture in her this morning Instagram stories with the text: “Affected by the dengue mosquito. Thailand. Dengue fever. Do you have tips? The only remedy is paracetamol.”

The presenter asks her followers if they have ever had dengue (or dengue fever), but 95 percent say no. Every year, an estimated 90 million people worldwide become ill from this virus. A small proportion of infections develop into a serious form, for example with severe bleeding and organ failure.

Life-threatening

Complications such as dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome can be life-threatening. It also happened to Lieke Pijnappels of the travel blog Little Wanderbook once. She was ill for two months and had to be hospitalized, she said some time ago RTL News.

It was really horrible, says Lieke. “My skin looked burnt, my hands and feet were itchy, water tasted sour. Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals in the tropics, not snakes and crocodiles. That is really something to remember and to pay attention to.”

Women over 50

As a woman over the age of 50, the dengue virus is potentially a lot more dangerous for Wendy, because the risk of having had it before – for example in a mild form – is greater. And, Lieke explains: “If you have had dengue and you get it again, the chance of very severe symptoms is ten times greater.”

For the time being, Wendy’s situation seems stable, because she was able to post an Instagram story this morning. However, serious complications cannot be ruled out at this stage of the infection.
