The well-known American television journalist Barbara Walters died on Friday at the age of 93. That has ABC News announcedthe American news channel where she worked for most of her career.
Walters joined ABC News in 1976 and became the first female host of a nationally broadcast evening news program. Three years later, she hosted 20/20, an investigative journalism program. In 1999, some 74 million viewers watched Walters during her interview with Monica Lewinsky about the affair with then-President Bill Clinton.
At the end of the interview, Walters asked Lewinsky what she would tell her future children about the affair, to which Lewinsky replied, “Mom made a big mistake.” Walters then said “and that is the understatement of the year”.
In 1997 she launched The View, in which a permanent panel of women discusses current affairs. Walters hosted the program until 2014, after which she remained an executive producer of the program.
During her career, Walters spoke to numerous public figures. She has interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin, among others, and has spoken to every American president and first lady since the 1970s. In her career spanning more than fifty years, she won 12 Emmy awards.
