There are major problems on the Maas near Grave because the weir is broken. During maintenance work, parts of the weir broke, so that the Meuse water is not held back by the lock and flows away extra hard through the river. A similar problem occurred a few years ago, causing houseboats and harbors to run dry. Even now, shipping traffic has come to a standstill. The water in the Maas could drop 1.5 meters.
The problem was caused by two broken yokes. These are the piles between which the gates of a weir hang. This allows the slides to open and close. Because those yokes have now been folded, the Meuse water has free play. This happened during work on the weir in Grave.
A contractor who was working on the site is trying to fix the problems. But that is a complicated job, because the current is very strong. Houseboat owners and marinas will be informed by Rijkswaterstaat.
Collision
In 2017 there were similar problems because a boat ran into the weir. Then the shipping traffic came to a standstill for more than half a year.
