Weilandt from VfL Bochum to Greifswalder FC: “Normally not representable”

Farewell after 6 years

Winger Tom Weilandt is leaving VfL Bochum after six years. After a total of 74 games for the club, the 30-year-old Rostock native is returning to his home region from Castroper Straße. Oberliga champions Greifswalder FC announced on Friday that the right-footed player had signed a three-year contract with the prospect of working locally in sponsorship and marketing following his active career.

Sports director David Wagner sees the change as a milestone for the club, which will compete in the regional league in the future: “Normally, such a transfer is not at all possible for our club. It was all about the package as a whole. Tom and his family really wanted to go back home, and he also wanted something long-term and sustainable for his professional future. In addition, and you have to be honest, he was extremely accommodating to us economically, so that we were then able to put together this overall package that everyone is happy with.”

Weilandt explained: “I think it’s a nice way to come back to it towards the end. (…) I had good conversations with David Wagner right from the start and then things actually happened very quickly. There is a real sense of optimism in Greifswald right now. And the perspective is great. After my career, I would like to work in marketing, I’m very interested in that, I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. A win-win situation for the club and me.”
