HANNOVER (dpa-AFX) – For Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil, the asylum decision by the EU interior ministers is a central topic in the upcoming federal-state consultations. “I expect that there will be numerous questions to the federal government regarding the asylum decision of the EU interior ministers – also with a view to the further procedure and the concrete implementation,” said the SPD politician of the German Press Agency in Hanover on Wednesday with a view to the Prime Ministers’ Conference (MPK) on Thursday. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is also taking part in the consultations in Berlin.
“The federal and state working group set up at the last MPK will present the first key points on the issue of future refugee financing, but concrete results – as agreed between the federal and state governments – will not be available until autumn,” said Weil.
According to the latest EU plans, tougher treatment of migrants with no prospects of staying is envisaged. In the future, people from countries that are considered safe should come to strictly controlled facilities under conditions similar to detention after crossing the border – including families with small children.
In addition to refugee policy, Weil sees energy and industrial policy as central topics in the talks. With the expansion of renewable energies and the grids, Weil hopes that the federal and state governments will be able to agree on joint and easily manageable monitoring. You need “regularly up-to-date and also regional data – only then can we intervene at an early stage if we fall behind in implementation,” said the Prime Minister./mni/DP/ngu
