Julian Weigl can “very well” imagine a longer engagement with Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach.
“Otherwise I wouldn’t have taken the step either. Nevertheless, we have to wait and see how the next few weeks and months will go,” said the midfielder in the “Sky” interview.
Weigl returned to the Bundesliga after two and a half years. Borussia initially loaned him out until the end of the season from Benfica Lisbon, where he only made three substitutions in eight competitive games under German coach Roger Schmidt in the summer.
“If the year is very successful and I can then do my part, then you will see whether both sides are ready for it,” said Weigl about a possible longer stay in Gladbach: “I have not yet spoken to Mr. Virkus and asked , how much can you pay. That’s not my job either. Then you have to include Benfica as a third party.”
The 26-year-old played for Borussia Dortmund from 2015 to the end of 2019 and won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2017. The EM participant from 2016 made his comeback in the national team in March after a five-year break. He hasn’t completely given up on returning to the DFB team, but he knows it will be difficult.
“In my position, it’s not like there’s no quality. But of course, you always have it on the screen and you look at the nomination and of course you would like to be there,” said Weigl.
