Weber will be missing from SC Magdeburg “indefinitely”

National handball player Philipp Weber will not be available to Champions League winner SC Magdeburg for an “indefinite period of time”. The SCM announced this one day after the successful start at the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia against home team Khaleej (29:20).

Weber twisted his left knee while making a jump shot and was stretchered off the field in the 23rd minute.

“We are not making any predictions yet and are waiting for the investigations in Germany. In any case, he will no longer be used in Saudi Arabia,” said Magdeburg coach Bennet Wiegert in a press release: “The loss obviously hits us very hard.”

Last week, Weber was back on the field for the national team for the first time since the World Cup last winter. The 31-year-old is one of national coach Alfred Gislason’s candidates for the home European Championships next January (January 10th to 28th).

Magdeburg can make it to the semi-finals of the IHF Super Globe in Dammam on Thursday (2.45 p.m.) with a win against Oceania champions University of Queensland. Weber’s failure was also bitter, “because Mika Damgaard returned from the national team with muscular problems and we also don’t know whether he is even eligible for the Super Globe,” Wiegert explained.
