With a view to expected temperatures well above 30 degrees at the weekend, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official heat warning for Berlin and parts of Brandenburg.
For the federal capital, Potsdam and other districts – as in many other parts of Germany – a strong heat load is expected, said the weather service on Saturday morning on its website.
In addition, the experts in many places drew attention to the unusually high level of UV radiation and the need for appropriate protective measures.
An additional load is to be expected due to reduced night-time cooling, especially in the densely built-up urban area, according to the heat warnings for Berlin and Potsdam, for example.
Before the midsummer weekend, experts had also warned of the particularly high risk of forest fires and the dangers of swimming in unguarded waters.
For Saturday, the DWD expects highs of between 30 and 33 degrees in northern Brandenburg and between 33 and 36 degrees in Berlin and southern Brandenburg. In the night to Sunday, individual strong thunderstorms are therefore possible in places.
On Sunday, local showers and individual thunderstorms are possible over the course of the day and severe weather cannot be ruled out, it said. The temperatures should therefore climb to 25 to 30 degrees in northern Brandenburg and 33 to 38 degrees in southern Brandenburg and in Berlin.
