Weak PSV suffers first loss of points after a dramatic start against FC Twente

PSV lost 2-1 to FC Twente on Saturday evening. The team from Eindhoven played a lousy first half and couldn’t get over an early 2-0 deficit. The defeat in Enschede means the first loss of points in the Eredivisie.

A donkey does not hit the same stone twice, but PSV does. Last season, the Eindhoven club was already 3-0 behind in Enschede after 25 minutes. That it was now limited to ‘only’ 2-0, was thanks to goalkeeper Walter Benitez. Where the visit to the Grolsch Veste is traditionally a difficult away game, the people of Eindhoven also traditionally started the game badly.

Twice, Vaclav Cerny was allowed to play freely. And both times the defense of the Eindhoven team looked anything but good. At times you could even call it a disgrace.

football fight
Despite the dramatic start, it was still exciting in Enschede. In the second half there was a completely different PSV. It was dominant and pushed the home side far back. That led to the connecting goal within ten minutes. Guus Til was the goalscorer.

The faith of the visitors was back with more than enough time for at least one more goal. And for a moment that equalizer seemed close too. However, that phase did not last long, especially because the Eindhoven residents continued to shoot at the back. For example, the team escaped the 3-1 after poorly processing a corner. Wout Brama shot just wide.

How good is PSV?
The equalizer did not come in the final phase, as a result of which PSV fell through the ice during the first real test in the competition. It is therefore still difficult to estimate how good this PSV really is. As soon as the resistance increases, you see that the team is lacking quality, especially in the back. This season, the club has not yet managed to keep a clean sheet.

This is something that will have to be worked on in the coming weeks. Bodo/Glimt awaits on Thursday and top matches against Arsenal and Feyenoord are also planned in the next two weeks.

Despite the fact that the visitors’ football was lousy at times, 30,000 people in the stands enjoyed a wonderful football fight. Of course, Ruud van Nistelrooij would prefer to win every match with 7-1 – as against Volendam earlier this week – but these kinds of matches still make the Eredivisie an attractive competition.

For now it’s just cry and move on. Continuing three points behind Ajax, which did win earlier this Saturday.
