Weak Ajax disappoints and is damaged again in the title fight

Ajax failed to beat Go Ahead Eagles. It ended in De Adelaarshorst 0-0. For the fourth league game in a row, the team from Amsterdam did not beat Go Ahead. Leader Feyenoord can benefit later this afternoon.

Ajax started with three changes in the starting line-up against Go Ahead Eagles. One of the newcomers was Davy Klaassen. The midfielder had the first opportunity of the game, but aimed wide. The first danger from the team from Deventer came after a loss of possession in Ajax’s midfield. Go Ahead came out very quickly via Isac Lidberg and Finn Stokkers, he found keeper Geronimo Rulli on his way.

Brian Brobbey, another new name, could have scored in the counterpunch. From a difficult angle he shot at goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange. Mohammed Kudus thought he would head in his twelfth goal after half an hour, but was flagged for offside. That judgment stood after interference from the VAR. Just before the break – not for the first time – Go Ahead came out dangerous on the counter. Edson Álvarez intervened in time.

After the break, Ajax hardly had any great opportunities. Davy Klaassen only took the first shot on goal in the seventieth minute. The team from Amsterdam did not succeed in destroying the team from Deventer. Go Ahead fought for every meter and kept it compact. Trainer John Heitinga tried to force something and let Owen Wijndal and Steven Bergwijn come in. Those switches did not produce the desired shock effect.

Jurrien Timber had a free head chance in the final phase, but his header lacked the power. A symbolic representation of the match. After that, the home team continued to defend well and Ajax’s last trump card, Lorenzo Lucca, could no longer change the result.

Due to the draw, Ajax takes second place from PSV again, but Feyenoord can increase the gap to eight points. The leader will play against Sparta Rotterdam from 2.30 pm. Next Wednesday, Feyenoord will be Ajax’s opponent in the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup. That game can be followed live at NH Sport on NH Radio.
