“We save 50 euros on a full cart if we go shopping just across the border”

Just across the border, not only the fuel, but also a number of foodstuffs and a visit to a restaurant are cheaper than with us. The price differential is apparently widening as inflation reaches unknown heights. According to some customers, you can save 50 euros on a full shopping cart. The Auchan department store in northern France has long been popular with residents from the border region, but now people from further afield also go shopping there.

A number of products are cheaper, but many brands are not on our store shelves. And that’s exactly what makes the difference. “If you look carefully and you buy the promotions here again, it can make a serious difference, up to 25 percent cheaper,” says Thierry Verhaeghe, who comes shopping in Auchan.

Today people are spending more consciously and mainly buy the food here that is cheaper and which load the car full. The cost of fuel to drive just across the border does not outweigh the amount you can save on the shopping cart.
