The BBC has announced a new documentary by investigative journalist Mobeen Azhar. The working title of the project is: “We need to talk about Kanye”. Accompanying the project, an eight-episode podcast series is to be published with “The Kanye Story”. All that is known about the release date is that it should be announced in the next few months.
Azhar, who is in charge, has already dealt with two other complex musicians’ stories in the past. In 2015 he produced the Prince documentary Haunting for Prince’s Vault, which was also the subject of his first book. In 2021 he dedicated himself to the fight of the #freebritney movement with “The Battle for Britney”. He has received a number of awards for his work on various other programs since 2017.
The reason for processing the case of Kanye West is his anti-Semitic statements and the still existing possibility that he will really run for the US presidency in 2024. At least the working title suggests that there is a need to classify the scandals and escapades in the influential and extraordinary career of the man who walked around with a “MAGA” cap for four years and then said that he always donated only to the democratic party.
In September 2021, before public anti-Semitism but after his endorsement of Donald Trump, his statements on slavery and his diagnosis of bipolarity, the documentary “Jeen-Yhus” was released on Netflix. It shows, without major classification, mainly archive material from the 21 years that spanned the rapper’s career up to that point. In January 2023, Kanye West reportedly married architect and designer Bianca Censori. In a recently published report, linked more than 30 anti-Semitic crimes and acts of violence directly to the statements made by the 45-year-old.
