“We live each day, the photos and videos offer a little comfort”

For example, she says that she tries to do something nice with the children every day. According to the publicist and photographer, she and the four children still live in a kind of bubble. “I keep it small, we live day by day. In addition to the enormous sadness, a lot has to be arranged, which gives some distraction and rhythm,” Daan tells the AD

Jumping in the deep end

It was previously announced that Daan’s column in mezzathe weekend supplement of the AD, will take over. At first, Daan laughed this idea off. Yet her column appears for the first time on Saturday. The idea came from Jan himself. “He emailed mezza with his plan and I thought: if they like it, I’ll jump in at the deep end.” She is nervous about this. “Of course I am not Jan and the readers only know me from his columns.”

Much grief to family Rot

To get through the days, the Rot family looks for distraction. “We try to do something nice every day; cooking together, walking, watching the Eurovision Song Contest, reading or playing a game. We also watch a lot of photos and videos from and with Jan. That gives some comfort.”

New columns by Daan Rot

Writing the columns also helps with this. Although this also causes sadness. “It helps against fleeing from reality, prevents me from just tidying up and painting rooms so as not to have to think or feel deeply. I can’t push the sadness under the rug. I also have to cry every time I work on the column or read to our daughter Elvis, but that doesn’t matter.”

Online farewell album

Actually, Daan’s very first column was supposed to appear earlier, but this has been postponed due to two unexpected columns by Jan. Just before his death, the singer and composer launched his last album online. The album contains 21 songs. There is a part of old recordings that the singer thinks back on with warm feelings. “’Have fun listening, with laughter and tears!’” he wrote on Twitter at the time.
