‘We are regularly hustling’

Mr. Nijsen lives in the WelThuis residential care center at the Buytenhaghe location and is perfectly at home here. That’s partly because of the fantastic healthcare workers who help him. Do you also see yourself working in such a nice environment? Then quickly check the vacancies at WelThuis.

“I’m glad I live here,” says Mr Nijsen. “The permanent team of welfare workers, carers and nurses takes good care of us. It is nice to have familiar faces around us and I appreciate being able to take my medication myself without being on the medication list.”

Care at your fingertips

When it comes to care, Mr Nijsen feels reassured. “I regularly have a nosebleed, but after pressing the bell they are inside no time with me. Every evening they come a few times to check if everything is okay. That makes me feel safe.”

Community feeling

But it’s not just about the care – the residential care center also offers a sense of community and lots of activities. “We do a lot of everyday things together,” he says. “We feel free to go crazy with each other, both with the residents and with the staff. And there’s quite a lot to do, from music afternoons and film screenings to clover jackets, chair yoga and even boxing lessons! If the staff has time, they participate.”

We have a good relationship with each other

Mr. Nijsen also emphasizes the importance of a friendly atmosphere and good communication. “Of course people sometimes don’t have their day, that’s life. But I notice that there are few exchanges of words. I think that’s because of the good relationship we have with each other. You get to know each other better and better.”

Volunteering at 74

However, it can be a challenge to make the transition to the residential care center and to give up a bit of independence. “I think it’s important to be able to discuss such things with the staff and that option is there,” says Mr. Nijsen. “Through the client council, I am committed to expanding spiritual care, so that the transition goes even more smoothly, for example.”

“When I moved here, I wanted to continue volunteering,” he continues. “In this way I can dedicate myself to my fellow residents, especially those who are not so articulate. Most in the client council are relatives of residents, except for one resident of De Morgenster. We would be very happy if someone else who lives at WelThuis would like to help us.”
