It was a short night for party leader John Frenken of the BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB). But as the big winner of the provincial elections, he woke up on Thursday morning with a wonderful feeling. “Euphoric I would almost say!”
It wasn’t until three o’clock in the morning that John came home after election night to the provincial house in Den Bosch. “It was fantastic, hectic,” he said around seven o’clock Thursday morning at the breakfast table. “Beyond expectations! We went to election night with the knowledge of the latest polls. We were in seven to eight seats. If you then end up at twelve, that naturally exceeds everything.”
“It has yet to sink in.”
In Zundert and Deurne, no less than a third of voters voted for the BBB, in Baarle-Nassau as much as forty percent. “This has yet to sink in,” John said with a laugh on Thursday morning. “It’s very special. This doesn’t just say something about BBB, it says a lot more and we have to get going with that.”
This afternoon the members of BBB will meet in the provincial house. “And then we’re going to get things started.”
“We’ve all been working hard on it for a year and a half.”
During the results evening on Wednesday evening, no cautious coalition has yet been signed on beer coasters, he swears. “No, absolutely not. In the first place, I don’t think there were any beer coasters. I didn’t drink any beer myself. Wednesday evening was not the place for that either.”
He also has not yet made a statement about which parties he would like to merge with. “I don’t know. We’ll first have a look at which route we want to use. From there something will come up automatically.”
According to Frenken, BBB is ready to take responsibility. Although it is a challenge, the greatest are as a newcomer to this level. “I think it will be a challenge for all parties. But we have all worked hard on it for a year and a half. We are ready!”
