The Platzspitz, a small park behind Zurich’s main train station, becomes the focus of the story of eleven-year-old Mia in Pierre Monnard’s drug drama be available. We are giving away three Blu-rays for the physical release of “Platzspitzbaby”.

Island idyll vs. Zurich drug milieu

Luna Mwezi plays Mia, who moves to the Zurich Oberland with her mother Sandrine in the spring of 1995. The reason for her move is the dissolution of the open Zurich drug scene, in which her mother was involved. Although the change of scenery initially seems positive, Sandrine relapses when old friends turn up in her new home. The only way out for Mia is her dream world, in which she imagines an idyllic family life on an island. But soon she meets a youth group in the real world that gives her the strength to stand up to her mother and her addiction.

The screenplay was based on Michelle Halbheer’s autobiography of the same name, in which, in collaboration with Franziska K. Müller, her past and her relationship with her mother are dealt with.

The Platzspitz really does exist

The Platzspitz is not a fictional place, but was actually known for its open drug scene in the 1980s: Narcotics were sold and consumed there, and the square also became the home of some drug addicts. The misery so openly displayed was only put to an end in 1992, when the square was cleared. So the scene initially shifted to the neighborhood and the Letten train station. Real improvement only came with a completely new drug policy and the closure of the train station in 1995.

Sarah Spale, known from “Night Train to Lisbon” and “Winterstille”, plays Sandrine, other actors are Anouk Petri, Delio Malär, Jerry Hoffmann and Caspar Kaeser. The film was released in German cinemas in December 2020 and became one of the most successful films in Switzerland with more than 300,000 cinema viewers.
