dfter three years of passionate work, from 20 May 2023, the Way of Queen Camilla will finally be open to all and officially passable. Indeed, the path becomes part of the network of the Italian Ways, traveled every day by thousands of pilgrims and wayfarers. It will make it possible to promote and make the tangible and intangible heritage of the city usable Amaseno Valleyan extraordinary territory from a cultural and naturalistic point of view, located in southern Lazio between the provinces of Latina and Frosinone.
The path will be officially presented on Saturday 20 May at 4.00 pm in the PIT room – Borgo di Fossanova, Priverno (Latina). We interviewed the geographer Sarah Carallo who, in love with this area, had the idea of creating the Way and proposed it to her fellow adventurers, Claudia Errico, Antonella Serpa and Maria Gabriella Donà with whom she founded the association Walk Free.

Where does the Way of Queen Camilla pass?
“The path is one 185 km ring route in one of the most beautiful rural landscapes in Italy and crosses the towns of Priverno, Roccagorga, Maenza, Prossedi, Giuliano di Roma, Villa Santo Stefano, Castro dei Volsci, Vallecorsa, Amaseno, the hamlet of Pisterzo, Roccasecca dei Volsci, Sonnino and the village of Fossanova».
How can it be traveled?
«It can be traveled on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. The slow way of traveling without polluting vehicles, characteristic of the paths, also contributes to the sustainability of the planet. Thanks to the collaboration with the association Free Wheels Onlus by Pietro Scidurlowe have devised an alternative route which it can also be crossed by people with special needswho cannot walk. This path crosses all the stages of the pedestrian path».

Because it is important?
«The path was built right away with local communities: mayors, administrations, local associations, including many young people, who immediately saw the journey as an opportunity for social and cultural development, but above all for economic development. This path can in fact represent ajob opportunities for the many young people who want to stay and live in these territories of the internal areas. Just think that in some of these places there was not even an accommodation facility and thanks to our work involving the local communities, structures began to be born even before the pilgrims arrived».
How did the idea of the Camilla of Queen Camilla come about?
«The idea of the path came from my work as a geographer. I had the opportunity to work in the territory of the Amaseno river valley, which is located between the provinces of Latina and Frosinone. I walked a lot in these places and I really fell in love with them. I fell in love with nature, with the historical-archaeological heritage and also with the communities that live in these places. The walk is coordinated by the A Piedi Liberi association and by XIII Mountain Community Monti Lepini and Ausoni and involves the whole territory.
Who is Queen Camilla?
“Queen Camilla is there protagonist of a legend narrated by Virgil in the Aeneid. She was the daughter of King Metabo, the king of the Volsci, she lived in the hills of the Lepini mountains and the Ausoni mountains in the valley of the Amaseno river for her entire life. She was educated from an early age in the art of warfare. She became the Queen of the Volsci and fought valiantly for her people to the lastdying in battle against Aeneas’ Trojan army.
