Hans-Joachim Watzke will leave the management of Borussia Dortmund when his contract ends in December 2025. The listed Black and Yellows announced this on Monday via ad hoc message known. The 64-year-old initially worked as treasurer at BVB since 2001, and since February 2005 he has held the position of chairman of the board. “I’m not extending my contract anymore,” said Watzke at the training camp in Marbella.
This marks the end of an era at BVB. Watzke had actually already announced his withdrawal for 2022, but then changed his mind due to the corona pandemic. Before his last extension, he said: “I know my responsibility towards this club very well. It is completely out of the question for me to disembark in the greatest crisis.”
Watzke has had a huge impact on the club’s development in recent years and experienced with BVB, among other things, the successful era under coach Jürgen Klopp with two championship titles in 2011 and 2012, the cup victory in 2012 and the Champions League final in 2013. Whether he is another will take over his position at BVB and who will be his successor is unclear.

In the German Football League, Watzke heads the supervisory board and is spokesman for the executive committee. Since the departure of the former DFL managing director Christian Seifert, the BVB boss has been the defining face of the league. For German football, he has also sat on the executive committee of the European Football Union as Vice President of the German Football Association since April 2023. His mandate in UEFA also ends in 2025.
