Borussia Dortmund’s head coach Edin Terzic is facing increasing criticism, as he scored fewer points in 15 league games than his predecessor Marco Rose a year ago. When asked about this, BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke made a remarkable suggestion as to why the separation of today’s Leipzig coach was the right decision.
25 points after 15 matchdays, sixth place in the Bundesliga: A look at the table makes fans of Borussia Dortmund shudder before the compulsory World Cup break. After the two most recent away bankruptcies against VfL Wolfsburg (0:2) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (2:4) – defeats five and six in the league – BVB is in crisis mode. Sports director Sebastian Kehl announced that a relentless analysis would be carried out during the World Cup in Qatar.
Nevertheless, BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke now demonstratively backed his head coach Edin Terzic. At the same time, in an interview with “BildTV”, he drew attention to himself with a statement about ex-coach Marco Rose.
“Marco Rose is a great coach, but we decided together to go our separate ways because a few things stood in the way and somehow he never really made it,” said Watzke about the separation from the native of Leipzig. The 63-year-old hinted: “Something was there that wasn’t right. We don’t know for sure ourselves.”
Marco Rose leads RB Leipzig to success again
Rose had six points more after 15 Bundesliga games last season. Nevertheless, the comparison to Terzic lags “at every corner”. Unlike Rose, Terzic managed to reach the last 16 of the Champions League with BVB. If Watzke has his way, the Mendener has the potential to attain the status of Jürgen Klopp in Dortmund at some point. “Jürgen Klopp has dedicated himself to the club for seven years. I see parallels with Edin, who is also totally focused on the club.”
For Marco Rose, however, the separation from Borussia Dortmund in the summer has definitely paid off. After the dismissal of Domenico Tedesco, another Champions League representative knocked in RB Leipzig.
Since taking over the reins from the Red Bulls in early September, RB have had four victories in the Champions League – qualifying them for the round of 16 – and seven more in the Bundesliga, including a 3-0 win on their debut against BVB. While Leipzig were eleventh in the Bundesliga table before he took office, they are now one of Bayern’s worst hunters, six points behind.
