Watford FC’s Ashley Fletcher Joins New York Red Bulls – At 26, Among Oldest Squad

With purchase option

The former Middlesbrough FC top scorer has not had a good start in the Premier League since joining Watford FC. Now Ashley Fletcher (26) tries in the United States. The New York Red Bulls from the MLS announced on Monday that the center forward would be loaned out for an initial period of six months. Then there is a purchase option.

With his experience from the first two English leagues, Fletcher should enrich the young squad of New Yorkers. More than 86 percent of current players are under the age of 26, putting Fletcher in the top four oldest professionals 26 and older. No field player at RBNY is older than 30. Meanwhile, his basic movement without the ball “suggests a good understanding of the game,” said Red Bulls coach Gerhard Struber about newcomer Fletcher. This is shown by “the fact that he recognizes and uses rooms with precise timing. Hopefully he will prove to be a good part of the attack.”

New York is the sixth professional stop for former Man United protégé Fletcher, who recorded 13 goals and seven assists in his best Middlesbrough season. Watford signed the former youth international on a free transfer in 2021 from Boro, who in turn paid West Ham over €7m for the West Yorkshire-born attacker in 2017.
