Water turned into poison: mass poisoning instead of a holiday

There are 11 people in Bashkiria poisoned by chlorine vapors during rest in the bath complex. Two are still in intensive care, the rest are in the toxicology department. According to preliminary data, there was more chlorine in the pool than was required by the norms. During the New Year holidays, similar incidents occurred in several regions at once.

In one of the cottages of the Domashny hotel in the Iglinsky district of Bashkiria, it is now somehow uncomfortable. On the table next to the pool are unfinished bottles of alcohol and the remains of Christmas dinner. One gets the feeling that people fled from this place, abandoning the holiday. Prosecutors, investigators and journalists are almost the first to see these walls after the night of January 7th.

“There was a poisoning of 11 vacationers with chlorine vapors directly from the pool,” said Aleksey Moiseev, assistant prosecutor of the Iglinsky district of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

On the morning of January 8, the bathing had to end unexpectedly. People smelled a strong smell of chlorine. The emerald water has turned to poison. One of the holidaymakers, who was diagnosed with asthma, began to choke.

“Poisoning with chlorine vapors occurred as a result of a malfunction of the equipment supplying chlorine to the pool,” explained Aleksey Moiseev.

11 people ended up in the hospital. But the owner of the hotel does not believe in the accidental breakdown of the chlorine supply equipment. And, it seems, she suspected her own clients of the simulation.

“This system has always worked well enough and did not give any failures. Maybe at the end of the trip they decided to do something themselves. We ourselves cannot understand this yet. I believe that they greatly inflated the whole situation. I felt very well at the moment that they are now in the hospital, they were left for several days, I think that they asked for it themselves, “says Rosalia Samigullina, owner of the Domashny hotel.

The guests of the bath complex in Bashkiria were not the only ones who breathed in the smell of chlorine along with the scent of tangerines on these New Year holidays.

In Omsk, nine children got sick from a sauna called “Paradise Lagoon”. They, too, were poisoned by chlorine in the pool. It turned out that the employees of the bath complex had simply forgotten to take the pill with the chemical out of the water.

In addition, as experts have found out, the staff of the “Paradise Lagoon” could go too far with reagents.

“Investigators have initiated a criminal case on this fact on the basis of a crime under Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation -“ Provision of services that do not meet the requirements of the safety of life and health of consumers, ”said Larisa Boldinova, senior assistant to the head of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in the Omsk Region.

According to chemical experts, chlorine, due to its properties, is best suited for disinfecting water. But you need to use it extremely carefully and strictly observe the proportions.

“The high content of residual chlorine in swimming pool water can lead to skin burns,” said Natalia Zhovtan, a dermatologist.

In Bashkiria, at the Domashny hotel, in which the management is trying to make their own clients guilty of chlorine poisoning, investigators still understand the nuances.

“It is planned to appoint and conduct expert studies in order to check the quality of the services provided to the requirements of the law. It is possible that in this case, a criminal case may be initiated. While the bath complex continues to work,” said Nikita Baev, Deputy Head of the Iglinsky Interdistrict Investigation Department of SUSK Russia in the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The very case when non-observance of a simple instruction can lead to the dock. But all that had to be done was to check the health of the equipment and calculate the chlorine dose. Or at least call an ambulance for guests who complained of poor health. According to vacationers, they even had to do this themselves.
