“Water resources are good, but we have to remain frugal,” warns De Watergroep | Interior

Stocks of raw water are “good”, reports De Watergroep. If it no longer rains, there will be enough water today until September. But we still have to continue to deal with water consciously, it sounds. “We are alert, but people should be too, even if it was a wet spring.”

According to De Watergroep, we are in better shape than last year. For example, the bone-dry summer then almost caused us to get into trouble “with the exception of a few weeks”. After all, the water of the Albert Canal, which is responsible for half of our water supply, dropped drastically. We owe it to our civic sense that we did not end up in a crisis situation then, it sounds. “We listened to our request to deal consciously with water,” says the director-general of De Watergroep Hans Goossens.

LOOK. What exactly are we talking about when it comes to groundwater?

And that is also reflected in the numbers. Water consumption fell by 4 percent last year, to an average of 77.5 liters per day per person. “That’s very little. In the Netherlands they use 130 liters of tap water per day per person. But there they barely use rainwater”. In the long term, consumption in Flanders should drop to 50 liters per day per person, without sacrificing comfort and hygiene, says Goossens.

If another dry summer descends on us, De Watergroep is counting on our civic sense again. “It would be a big mistake to think that we shouldn’t be sparing with water because the spring was very wet. We must always be frugal.” The group points out that the first warm and dry days have already led to peaks in water consumption of 10 to 15 percent.
