The German water polo players, who had already qualified for the knockout round, missed out on winning the group at the European Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands. The team of national coach Sven Schulz, unbeaten in the first two games, lost clearly 6:12 against Great Britain and finished the preliminary round in Group D in second place.
The selection of the German Swimming Association (DSV) will fight for a place in the round of 16 in the crossover matches on Monday at 7:00 p.m. The opponent is France.
As expected, the German men’s team lost 6:14 against Olympic champions Serbia, but performed respectably, especially at the beginning. Progression in Group C remains in their own hands, but Germany has to beat Israel, which still has no points, on Tuesday.
The men’s and women’s tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Israel, but was canceled due to fighting in the region.
While the women’s European Championships are now being held in the Netherlands (until January 13th), the men’s tournament will take place in the Croatian cities of Zagreb and Dubrovnik (until January 16th). After their opening win against Malta, the men will be challenged against Serbia on Sunday.
In addition to the title, both European Championships are also about a ticket for the Olympic Games in Paris and three starting places for the upcoming World Cup in Doha (February 2nd to 18th).
