Water bomb floods streets in Oostkamp

Water bomb floods streets in Oostkamp

Local residents heard a very violent clap of thunder and then the heavens opened inexorably above Emiel Welvaertstraat and surrounding streets in Oostkamp. Up to 40 liters of rain fell in just half an hour. A huge amount. Due to the heavy rainfall, the residents hardly dared to leave their homes during the water bomb, but they did get the water inside. †Read more below the photo)

Very local downpour

Once the downpour was gone, the damage was apparent. The drainage in the streets could not swallow the water. Some people in the street also had water in their homes. The fire brigade came to the scene to help people and to pump out water. This was especially necessary in the Emiel Welvaertstraat. But surrounding streets such as Rozenstraat, Olmenstraat and Korenbloemstraat were also flooded. The firefighters of emergency zone 1 had their hands full.

But the impact also turned out to be very local at the same time. A little further on, in Moerbrugge, ‘barely’ 10 liters of water fell in the same period. Forty years ago, the neighborhood also experienced floods.
