District administrators Micha Mos and Esther Fabriek opened the lock above the Singelgracht garage this morning. This causes the water to return to the canal. The garage itself should open early next year.
The garage, on the border of Center and West, will soon have room for 800 cars. In return, the same number of on-street parking spaces will be removed, including parking spaces in the Marnixstraat, the Jordaan and the Staatsliedenbuurt. “It all seems to be a lot of fun here, with benches and seats. And on the other side you will have a whole promenade,” says a local resident.

A hairdresser in Marnixstraat is actually concerned. “Because I don’t know what our future looks like. Fewer places, fewer customers, that’s how I see it.” The parking garage is mainly intended for local residents with a parking permit. 80 percent of the places are intended for them and 20 percent for visitors.
The construction of the garage caused a lot of noise pollution in the neighborhood and the garage cost 80 million euros, i.e. one hundred thousand euros per parking space. The district administrators emphasize that for that amount, a lot of space can be ‘given back’ to residents, for example for greenery or bicycle parking spaces.
“For us, a car does not need to be banned, it must find its place in a different way”
Mos, who is a member of GroenLinks and also about the pile plan goes to the center, does not find it strange to be proud of the garage. “For us, a car does not need to be banned, it must find its place in a different way,” says the district manager.
All kinds of work will take place in the coming months. The garage should be festively opened at the beginning of 2024.
