Amateur football player Freddy de Grooth (38), good for 544 league goals and better known as Freddy Frikandel or Frikandellen Freddy, said goodbye to Groninger Boys in a special friend match.
At least as a player. As a trainer, he will train the first Sunday team of the club next season, together with Albert Nout.
After scoring his 500th league goal a few years ago, his club surprised him with his own square, the Freddy de Groothplein, the square with the bicycle shed at Groninger Boys. The 544 hits that De Grooth has scored after about twenty seasons is still a record in northern amateur football.
Players with whom De Grooth played during his long, twenty-year career at, among others, PKC’83, DIO Groningen, Pelikaan S and Groninger Boys, were there to say goodbye in a special friend match.
There were beautiful speeches, there was football, there were – of course – goals from Freddy himself, including a very nice one. And of course there were frikandels.
