Waste not processed according to the rules: AVI must pay

Waste processor AVI in Den Bosch has received two fines of 75,000 euros. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the company dumped shredder waste in the autumn of 2020 at a processor in Heijningen, which is not accredited for this. It also had stored more scrap and shredder waste at the Rietveldenkade than was allowed, an investigation revealed.

A few months later, a major fire broke out on the AVI site in Den Bosch. There was also a huge fire in October 2021. Even then there turned out to be too much waste on the complex. Despite criticism from politicians and local residents, relocating AVI is not an option.

The fines that the waste processor has now received are the result of a penalty order: a penalty proposed by the Public Prosecution Service and accepted by AVI. The company previously said it disagreed with the allegations.

Apart from the fines, the company still had to hand over the illegally dumped waste to a recognized processor. This has already happened. It was about 5,000 tons.

Research also made it clear that AVI, which has been controversial for a long time, has not correctly reported all incoming and outgoing industrial waste to the National Waste Reporting Centre. The abuses were brought to light by the police (East Brabant environmental team and Zeeland-West Brabant environmental team), led by the Functional Public Prosecutor’s Office.
