6 FEBRUARY KAHRAMANMARAŞ EARTHQUAKES
The earthquakes that occurred in Pazarcık and Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023 were one of the largest earthquake disasters in Turkey’s recent history. The earthquakes were felt across a wide area of Turkey and Syria, despite the distance of 100 kilometers between the epicenters.
💥Size: The Pazarcık earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 and the Elbistan earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6. These earthquakes were the largest earthquakes to occur in Turkey after the earthquake of August 17, 1999.
💥Focus depth: The Pazarcık earthquake occurred at a depth of 8.6 kilometers, and the Elbistan earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

17 AUGUST 1999 MARMARA EARTHQUAKE
The earthquake occurred in Gölcük district of Kocaeli and was followed by aftershocks. The places most affected by the earthquake were Kocaeli, Istanbul, Sakarya, Yalova and Düzce. In the earthquake, 17 thousand 480 people lost their lives, 44 thousand 700 people were injured and more than 200 thousand buildings were destroyed. The earthquake significantly increased Turkey’s awareness of earthquake risk. After the earthquake, new regulations were made regarding earthquake-resistant building construction in Turkey.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 Ms with its epicenter in Erzincan. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the magnitude of the earthquake as 7.8 Mw (± 0.4).
